The whimsical sampler stitched by Martha Smith features a tall, thin man with a top hat and walking stick, a small, light-colored dog, two flower urns, a moth, a bird, and a rose. It is believed to have been stitched between 1865-1880.
Is it possible that Martha stitched a sampler to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln? The tall man in the distinctive black top hat with a walking stick could be a nod to President Lincoln.
In some instances the moth motif represents mourning, and birds have been known to be revered as harbingers of death. Were these two motifs also clues Martha left revealing her deep sadness for President Lincoln’s passing?
What we do know is that this quaint sampler offers a glimpse into the creative needlework abilities of a young girl who crafted a work of beauty that lives on more than 150+ years later.
Finished sampler measures 147W X 139H stitches. Model stitched using DMC on 38 count Fuller’s Teazel Linen by Access Commodities. It is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities and contains no speciality stitches.

Terms & Conditions for Preorders and Special Order items-
- Patterns generally arrive within a month of their release (Market and Expo times can cause variation). New releases can be about a month while existing releases may only take a few days as they are simply being restocked.
- Fabric will be dyed to order and time varies between the Dyers. Generally between 4-12 weeks.
- Threads generally arrive within a few days to a month.
- Should you want to cancel any items within your order, you will only be refunded in store credit less a restocking fee.
- If I cannot fulfill your order due to supply issues or discontinuance, I will refund your original payment method and contact you for alternatives.
Preorder & Special order items are NOT IN STOCK and will ship within 2 business days of arrival. If you order these items and other in stock items, your entire order will ship when your FULL ORDER is in stock. Please contact me if you need items from your order sooner, we can work on it together.
Cancellations
Refunds for cancelling any item with Preorder in the title, will be issued as a Store Credit less a 30% restocking fee. All cancellations are refunded in Store Credit only.
Postage & Handling is not refundable as it is a service that is not refundable once a shipment is mailed and accepted by the carrier
